San Quirico d'Orcia Tuscany
An enchanting little medieval town on the Via Franchigena
San Quirico d'Orcia is a picturesque little town perched on the top of a hill overlooking the countryside of Valdorcia. At the start of the 11th century, San Quirico was already known as important town on the Via Franchigena pilgrim route. In 1154, Fredrick I the 1st met with the pontifical authorities here on the occasion of his coronation as Holy Roman Emperor. In 1552, Charles V chose San Quirico d'Orcia as strategic town from where to control the territories of the Orcia valley.
The medieval urban plan of the town has been almost entirely unaltered by the passage of time. Within the perimeter walls, one finds: the Church of the Collegiata with its three Romanesque portals; Palazzo Chigi, one time residence of the town's highly influential Chigi dynasty; the Church of San Francesco, inside which one finds a Madonna attributed to Andrea della Robbia: the Horti Leonini gardens, dating back to 1580; and the delightful little Church of Santa Maria dell'Assunta.
