Orbetello and Argentario, Tuscany

Many centuries ago, on the coast of Tuscany, the forces of nature joined what was once an island to the mainland: connecting Mount Argentario to the town of Orbetello. In the process, the lagoons of Orbetello were formed, resulting in a unique ecosystem in which an incredible variety of fish and bird species can be found. Thousands of visitors make their way to this corner of Tuscan Maremma each year to observe the colonies of pink flamingos which inhabit the lagoons. Particularly popular with bird watchers, the area is also a favorite destination for walkers and mountain bikers, keen to explore the panoramic coastal pathways.

Orbetello has an attractive historic center where to admire the imposing walls built by the Etruscans in the 5th century B.C., and the 14th century Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, edifice constructed on the ruins of an ancient Roman-Etruscan temple. Orbetello's archaeological museum, located in the town's Polveriera Guzman, more than merits a visit.

Orbetello is known as the gateway to the Argentario. It is, in fact, from here, via the artificial embankment, better known as the Orbetello Lagoon dam, that holiday makers reach the celebrated bathing resorts of Porto Santo Stefano and Porto Ercole.
