Massa Marittima, Tuscany

A beautiful medieval town in the heart of Northern Maremma, Massa Marittima rests on a hill, some four hundred meters above sea level and just over twenty kilometers from the coast. The town is comprised of Massa Vecchia (old Massa) and Massa Nuova (new Massa). Massa Vecchia boasts the greatest number of historic buildings, the majority of which overlook the centrally located Piazza Garibaldi. The Cathedral of San Cerbone, sporting a wonderful, pinnacled, Romanesque-Gothic façade, dominates the square and the skyline of Massa Marittima. Taking pride of place in the choir of the cathedral, almost immediately behind the high altar, there is the "Arca di San Cerbone": a magnificent marble shrine containing the relics of Saint Cerbonius and sculpted by the Siennese artist, Goro di Gregorio, in 1324. Serving as fulcrum of both the town's spiritual and political life, Massa Marittima's Piazza Garibaldi is home not only to the Cathedral but also to the Palazzo del Podestà and Palazzo Comunale.

The prosperity of Massa Marittima, also known as "Massa Metallorum", was largely due to the precious mineral deposits discovered in the area. So as to recount the town's mining history, two fascinating museums have been realized. The Mining Museum has been created in a disused mine shaft. The Museum of Art and Mining History, housed in the 14th century Palazzetto delle Armi, contains an impressive collection of mining tools and other objects traditionally used by the miners.
