Surrounded by the lush countryside of Tuscan Maremma and the clear blue waters of the Tyrrhenian sea, Castiglione della Pescaia is, arguably, the province of Grosseto's most attractive coastal town. An important medieval fishing town, complete with magnificent 15th century castle, today Castiglione is one of Tuscany's most glamorous bathing resorts. Whether they be lazing on the beaches or mooching through the streets lined with exclusive boutiques and fashionable restaurants, in Castigione della Pescaia celebrities of world-wide fame abound.
The clean, sandy beaches of Castiglione are among the finest of all those on the Tuscan coast. Here you can choose to pay for a place beneath a beach umbrella at one of the well appointed bathing establishments closest to the town, or stroll just a little further to find a more secluded spot, out of sight and sound of the crowds. A number of the beaches are bordered by shady pine woods. The most important is the Tombolo Pine Wood, which, traversed by numerous bridleways, provides the perfect terrain for horse riding and mountain biking.
For many, the true jewel of Castiglione is its Punta Ala district; positioned on the extreme tip of the promontory. An exclusive bathing resort, exceptional tourist harbor, and one of the most prestigious golf clubs in Italy, make Punta Ala an extremely sought after holiday destination. This is where the Luna Rossa sailboat first tested the waters, before going on to participate in the America's Cup.
