Bagno Vignoni Tuscany
An ancient village in Valdorcia, famous for its thermal waters
Bagno Vignoni is a picturesque village in Tuscany's Valdorcia, for centuries famous for its thermal waters. A large pool, filled with the warm water bubbling up from the natural springs, is situated right in the center of the medieval village.
The loggia which borders one side of the pool bears the name of Saint Catherine who, it is believed, often came to Bagno Vignoni to bathe in the waters and benefit from their curative powers, as did many a Sienese aristocrat.
Recently, a number of spa resorts and hotels have developed in the immediate vicinity of the springs. The appeal of this village, seemingly untouched by the passage of time, increases further still during the cold winter evenings, when the houses and palazzi are enshrouded by the mist rising up from the pool: scene immortalised by the Russian director Andrej Tarkóvskij in his film "Nostalgia".
