Tuscany beyond the beaten tracks
Three reasons why you'll love it here
- A 17th century hamlet just beyond the walls of Lucca
- Typical Tuscan dishes prepared with local ingredients
- Arbuolo farm's olive oil, honey and wines
Amongst the green, chestnut covered hills north of Lucca, an abandoned medieval village has been reborn, transformed into a unique hotel, a special place, for holidays and celebrations, - Borgo Giusto. The nucleus of Borgo Giusto was built in the 17th century. Over the years, the population declined and by the 1950 the village was all but deserted. However, in 1995, the little complex began to come back to life, and now, refurbished on sustainable lines, the old borgo provides period accommodation with modern comfort and technology.
The peaceful hamlet seems unchanged. Little, narrow alleyways and steps open onto the tiny square. Traditional stone buildings with tiled roofs, brick loggias and porticos cluster together. But this is, in fact, a country hotel, composed of elegant suites, apartments, houses and villas. A varied selection of accommodation ranges from a little house for two to a villa sleeping twelve. The interiors have been carefully restored, with wood or tiled floors, traditional fireplaces and furnishing, but have modern accoutrements - Jacuzzis, whirlpool and hydromassage showers, LCD satellite TV, ADSL Wi-fi, and fully fitted kitchens. The complex is managed by a centralised, eco-friendly system. Heating, hot water and electricity are supplied by a wood-burning furnace, and solar and photovoltaic panels.
Three cosy dining rooms have been formed from farm workers' cottages into Borgo Giusto's "Gallo Brillo" Restaurant. Here the low carbon footprint ethos continues with the use of wood-burning stoves to create delicious traditional Tuscan specialities using the produce of Borgo Giusto's Arbuolo farm. The farm's produce, (fruit, vegetables, olive oil, preserves, honey), are also for sale in the borgo's shop.
The tranquil village is a place for relaxation - wellness services include personalised massage, in room or by the pool. There are two pools integrated into the village design, an adult pool with a Jacuzzi and a pool for the children. When they are not in the pool, there is a great playground to keep the kids happy. The active can head off into the surrounding hills on foot, horseback or mountain bike, along the many trails which lead from Borgo Giusto. Should you wish to venture further a ield, the fascinating villages, castles, villas, towns and famous cities, the beautiful nature reserves, parks, mountains and shore of this part of Tuscany are all within easy reach.
