Certosa di Maggiano Siena

The Certosa di Maggiano enjoys a superb position in the countryside immediately outside the old walls of Siena. As its name suggests, this delightful Relais & Chateaux property occupies what was once a Carthusian monastery. Built in 1314, the charterhouse and grounds were used by monks up until 1792 when Duke Leopold II dispossessed them of their cells and sold the property to private individuals. In 1969 the ex monastery was purchased by Anna Grossi Recordati, the lady responsible for the restoration and transformation of the complex in one of Siena's most highly acclaimed luxury hotels.

The hotel has a total of 17 individually appointed rooms of various dimensions which were formerly the monks cells and now offer unique and supremely elegant accommodation, equipped with every modern convenience.

The seasonal menus of the hotel's "Il Canto" restaurant feature superb dishes inspired by local Sienese and Tuscan culinary traditions and prepared with the highest quality, same-day fresh ingredients A great deal of the fresh herbs, vegetables and fruits used in the kitchens of the Certosa di Maggiano are grown on the farmland belonging to the ancient monastery. The exquisitely furnished dining room of the Certosa di Maggiano provides the elegant venue for evening meals during the cooler months. In the summer, dinner is served beneath the arches of the main cloister of the hotel.

The hotel's public rooms are adorned with beautiful furnishings and important works of art. The "Sala Imperatori" contains 12 magnificent canvases depicting the 12 emperors of Rome. The fascinating library of the Certosa di Maggiano's is lined with superb Adler bookshelves and furnished with comfortable divans upholstered in precious silk.

Leisure facilities at guests disposal include an open air heated swimming pool, tennis court and small fitness room. A heliport is available for those wishing to arrive at the property by helicopter.
